Hi!
Happy Holidays to you all!
Enjoy the Break!
I've posted the video of my performance in the Winter Concert up on YouTube. (My family had taped me). I'm playing a Spanish piece called Requiebros by Gaspar Cassado (in case you weren't there to get a program). I hope you can all find some time during the break to watch the video. I'd really appreciate it. In fact, it would be even nicer if you could give me a good rating (hint, hint). Whatever you end up doing, I again wish you Happy Holidays and A Great Winter Break.

See Ya Lata! (If you pronounce this phonetically, it sort of rolls off the tongue doesn't it?)

PARTY!
Hi!
Happy Holiday season... After much debate I have decided to host the holiday party!!!!!!!!!
:) :) :)
How does the Friday 12/21 of the Holiday Program sound? We could meet up at my house an hour or so after the program...OR multiple hours later for an evening party like last year. What do you think?
If this date conflicts with anybody, please let me know.
Also, I would really like it if we did a bit of a pot-luck kind of thing where everyone brings one dish they make (or purchase) to the party...
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zo :)
P.S. do i need to make an invite or is this sufficient?

Potential Scavenger Hunt Items-to-be-Found Postathon
As promised, here is the post where you should comment your ideas for the Potential Scavenger Hunt Items-to-be-Found Postathon. Let's get a lot of ideas down so they can be compiled Monday night for the drawing on Tuesday during lunch. Avoid anything you know you have. Let's make it fun. We'll discuss scoring later, but please get commenting.
Homework for December 6, 2007
Hey Everybody!
It's late...I'm late...Everything's late. I'm sorry and this is probably pointless except for a few announcements I want to make. Firstly, I will present to you, the one, the only, Mirman Class of '08 homework:
English: Podcast
Science: Current Event (for most...LOL)
Geometry: p. 368 1-11
Algebra:
Latin:
Now that that's out of the way, let's talk. The scavenger hunt is kind of dying, and I don't want it to, so, to stop its decline in popularity, I am declaring Friday-Monday the first ever Potential Scavenger Hunt Items-to-be-Found Postathon. That's right folks, all this weekend post post post or comment comment comment that is all the ideas you have for items. Bad or good all will be accepted and welcomed. I will make a separate post where the comments should be placed and by Tuesday next week at lunch when we announce the list I want to see the number of comments on that post in the double digits. OK! WE CAN DO IT!
On another note, Tomorrow is Dress However You Feel Day. No gimmicks, 'kay?
Lastly, I appreciate Alexander's thought of creating an alumni blog for our grade, but this will still remain our main blog for the rest of this year. I was afraid there was some confusion, so hopefully this clears things up. WE ARE NOT, I REPEAT, ARE NOT, MOVING TO ANOTHER BLOG. We just hit 100 posts people, by the end of the year I expect over 1,000.
Hopefully I have left no stone unturned...wait. Sorry. If you missed the post where we are supposed to comment on what our wishlist is for Secret Santa, don't forget to post there. It is vital that everyone gives their secret santa an idea of what they want. Try to be specific, because if you aren't, it is very difficult for people to know what to get you. I know I have been stuck many a time before. It doesn't need to be exactly what you want e.g. My Little Pony Christmas Edition Deluxe. It just needs to be somewhat specific e.g. a doll...preferably My Little Pony...preferably Christmas Edition...preferably Deluxe.
Now that I've cleared that up, I think I'm done. Hope you all have a pleasant night, and enjoy reading this tomorrow. LOL.

my next-door-neighbor's birthday is today, december 6th, and she is an amazing 106 YEARS OLD!!!!! she is sooooo unbelievable. her mind is so clear and she is the sweetest, most vital person i think i have ever met. I asked her how she thinks she has lived such a long life tonight, and she told me she thought it was from God's blessing and healthy eating. I'm not trying to convert anyone but let's focus on the healthy eating part. Hehehehehehehe. She knows EVERYTHING about healthy eating from how sugar is worse for you than you think (EAT molasses!!!) to which fruits and vegetables to put in a breakfast shake! She told me all of this and more....and SHE'S 106!!!!!!!!!! Personally, I'm inspired. And to all those vegetarians out there, she did...and may still eat red meat!!! But whatever...i'm just kidding anyway. My point is that in life we just need to be kind to others and eat healthily (is what she told me.) Basically I was so moved that I just wanted to share this with you guys. ONE HUNDRED AND SIX!!!!!!!!! OMG, she has lived through like everything we are learning for our AMERICAN EVENTS TESTS. LOL thats cool.
LOVE, evan
P.S. if you listen to her speak, you'd think she was like 75. the only thing oldish about her is her furniture...and maybe her T.V.
P.P.S. she escaped the Armenian genocide!!!!! sorry...i just luv her. i think she's gonna live forever a la Tuck Everlasting.
WE LOVE YOU MRS. BOSTON!!!!!!!! (my shout-out but i said 'we'....hope you all don't mind. :P)

History Reminder
Hello. There are two dates I would like to remind you of:
Tuesday, December 11: American Events #2 Test (study well, because this one counts for two grades).
Monday, December 17: Work-in-progress for our independent projects, 3 primary sources and enough secondary sources (Mr. Lee didn't give a specific number) to provide "historical context."I can post the criteria on which we'll be graded, if you like.
Good luck with the memorizing.

Ballad!
Hey everyone. I just finished my ballad and I was wondering if anyone still had the sheet of instructions. I wish to go back and check to make sure I have absolutely everything that I need, and if you have the sheet, I was hoping you could post it. Thanks!
-Oh, and thanks everyone, my ankle is fine now. :P
-And, what is our theme tomorrow? Keep in mind that it is supposed to rain.
-Okay, I'm done now.

Secret Santa
Hey guys! Happy Holidays!
Please remember that every present should be under $20 and no gift cards -- except for people who request them.

Secret Santa!!!!
yay!
i am so excited for secret santa, and to make it easier on those who have absolutely no idea what to get their "secret person," i think that we should all post a general "something." it shouldn't be too specific, so that person has to really buy you something that "they" think that you want.
p.s.,
i am crazy excited for winter break and the holiday program!

Latin Lines 7-17 due tomorrow
hey guys. my lines were lines: 9 and 10. here they are:
Titus, with both his friends, was playing a game containing three people. Thus, when they themselves had enough training, they asked for more oil from the servants and they were being rubbed down with a strigil.
have fun! and by the way, make sure that you do the proper lines!!!
T: lines 7 and 8
Evan: lines 9 and 10
Salvador: lines 11 and 12 and 17
Rick: lines 13 and 14
Jackie: lines 15 and 16
Salvador has to do line 17 as well because his two regular lines are the shortest. Thanks! Don't let anybody down guys!

Clothing and Toy Drive
Hello, everyone. I hope you've had a nice, long weekend. We have had many days off recently, and that has put me in a very good mood. Anyway, to the point: as some of you already know I'm organizing a clothing and toy drive for the victims of the wildfires, and some help would be greatly appreciated. All you have to do is talk briefly to your senior service classes about it, if you want to, and for those who don't I'll go and speak to those classes myself. And, if you wished, you could help me possibly after school, or during LEAP. You may be wondering: what's in it for me? Well, you'll get community/school service if you help out. I'm not quite sure which, as it involves both the school and the community; I'll ask Mrs. Geffen later.
Here's a copy of the article that is going in tomorrow's newsletter:
California Wildfire Victims In Need
In keeping with the holiday spirit, please consider donating a few items to help the victims of the recent fires. Members of the student body wish their Mirman community to participate in easing the recovery of those families displaced from their homes by the wildfires. The Salvation Army, in partnership with Goodwill, is accepting donations. Please bring new or gently used, laundered clothing and/or children’s toys to the front or back gates starting December 5th and ending on the 14th. To make it easier for collection, please remember to place these items in either boxes or plastic bags. Donations received at Mirman will be taken to Goodwill for further distribution to those in need. Thank you for your generous efforts!
For further information please contact Madeleine Shelton, US 4, at smileyface1108@yahoo.com or 1(310) 451-1545.
So, if you could, help the wildfire victims by helping me with this drive, as it can't happen unless I have support of at least a few classmates. Anybody in the upper school can help, so spread the word.
Thanks,
Madeleine

Scavenger Hunt List
Hey everyone! For our weekly scavenger hunt, i think every group should come up with 4 items, and post them here in the blog. There will be a total of 20 items that would need to be found by Wednesday every week! So please start consulting with your group via email or at school tomorrow to come up with your 4 items

New Blog Idea
I just created a blog called "Mirman Class of 08" (at mirmanclassof08.blogspot.com) for next year, so we can all keep in touch. Do you guys like the idea? (Truthfully, we could do the same thing with this blog, we don't really need a new one (we could just take "HW" out of the title))

Mr. West Homework
We don't have any homework from Mr. West because he didn't give us our journals back, right? Also, does anybody know when the "create your own" (the thing were we express ourselves) project is due?
If you do, please post.

Creating a Kaleidoscope Image
Hey everyone! The Kaleidoscope is due on friday 12/7/07. If you want to do what Duri wants, fallow the following instructions:
Prepare object file
1. Open the “Shoe.psd” image, and check to see that the resolution is at 300.
2. You will need to use a variety of tools to separate the shoe from the background (Magic Wand, Lasso, Easer Tool with a soft edge).
3. Your goal is a very clean selection, but with a slightly soft edge (anti-aliased). This will take patience and attention to detail. Zoom in so that you can clearly see the edges.
4. You can add a black background layer to see if there are any stray marks. Clean up, trash the background, and Save.
5. Create a new file for your kaleidoscope, 10” x 10” @ 300 dpi. Add horizontal and vertical Guides that intersect in the middle. Name it “Kaleidoscope.”
Creating the Kaleidoscope
1. Drag the “Shoe” layer onto the Kaleidoscope file. Using Free Transform with the Shift key, resize so that it will fit on the file, leaving some space at the edge. You can add a vertical Guide at 1” for reference.
2. Center the tip of the shoe at the intersection of the Guides.
3. Duplicate the layer, Rotate 40° using Free Transform and the menu bar at the top, then position the toe of “Layer 2 copy” at the intersection of the Guides.
4. Repeat this procedure 7 more times until you have completed the circle.
5. Drag to reverse the order of the layer so the pattern of the bow at the toe is revealed.
Adding Color
1. Merge the layers, and rename the layer “Shoes.”
2. Select the Magic Wand and set the Tolerance to 70. Select the shoes image. Add to (Shift) or subtract from (Option) the selection until you have only the shores.
3. Go to Select>Save Selection and name it “Shoe Wheel.” The selection will be saved as a new channel, which can be loaded at any time and will not be lost when you close the file.
4. Select Command-I to invert the “Shoe Wheel.”
5. Select the Radial Gradient and foreground and background colors using the Color panel. In the menu bar, select a Mode (try Overlay). Reduce the opacity to 85%.
6. Drag from the center, out to the edge of the shoes to apply your gradient.
Experiment
1. Try adding other filters and combinations of filters.
2. Try adding an Adjustment Layer and playing with contrast, color balance, hue, and saturation.
2. Add a background layer and fill with a color that adds contrast to your piece.
Hope this helps! Happy Hanuka for those who celebrate it!
Peace and Love,
Ellie Diamant

2. Add a background layer and fill with a color that adds contrast to your piece.
Hope this helps! Happy Hanuka for those who celebrate it!
Peace and Love,

Evan's Words of Wisdom No. 2
back by popular demand, its Evan's words of wisdom!!!! word of wisdom number one: if you cannot sing, do not perform in front of a bunch of deaf, brainwashed girls in chicago, illinois (cough, cough, corbin). {i'm chillin with my guys, we steppin out tonight...} secondly, do not let ur son or daughter date the son or daughter of your high school sweetheart without telling them (rufus humphrey!!!!) otherwise, when your son invites his girlfriend over for thanksgiving dinner and she brings her mom, you will be caught in a very tough position, judging by the fact that your wife and ex-girlfriend might have some...well...unfinshed business. GOSSIP GIRL REFERENCE ALERT! the third word of wisdom is: always order the gingerbread ice blended from coffee bean! its amazing! word of wisdom number 4: if your house's heater is being stubborn and will not work and is thus leaving your family freezing for 2 weeks, you can at least help yourself by wearing your comfortable senior sweatshirt to bed at night! it warms your bitter heart...trust me. number 5: always see a group of middle schoolers perform the lion king! it'll be so fabulous....but you might wanna jump up there and sing yourself. and then you might catch yourself thinking "ooo what if my class did THIS musical??" but then you will realize you've only gotten your hopes up.....heh heh heh. and lastly, the most important word of wisdom of all is: never have a (body part) so impressive, that an alumni that you rarely talked to relates to one of your classmates that you have an "impressive INSERT WHATEVER APPLIES HERE (like mad-libs!)" okay then! this is the oh so wise evan signing off. until next time......
love, evan
i will have more frequent installments math class...i promise! :-)

evan's blabber post
hey guys. this blabber post is pretty much all of the things swirling in my head that i feel like either asking or talking about.
1.) we need to complete our scavenger hunt list
2.) my friend is making his very own CD
3.) i went to sunday school today and we learned about Zacharias and Elizabeth. (great lesson, by the way)
4.) we need to pull our secret santas for the holiday party
5.) i undid all of my knitting. i was quite frustrated. and on top of that, i couldn't exactly remember how.
6.) since we come back to school on a leap i think our schedules should look like this:
-senior service (for most)
-math
-KNITTING WITH MME. SACKS?
-theatre (thespian festival participants only)
-P.E. (for people who take it usually)/PHILOSOPHY
-yearbook/whatever
what i mean to say is, i think it would be fun if we all took a knitting period together.
7.) what will this week's friday free dress theme be?
and that is pretty much all, i think. of course i do have other things going 'round in this little head of mine, but, we don't need to go into all of that.
WORD UP! (its the code word.....)

sincerely (or sarcastically),

December
Happy December Everyone!!!
Guessssss what! It's me again. Isn't that exciting?!!!
Well, I hope this new month is turning out marvelously for everyone!
I have nothing extraordinary to say excepting my two previous comments
(for they indeed were extraordinary).
The problem with school in December is that my and other people's anticipation for Winter Break can be stronger than their regard for their present classes.
And it can also get pretty darn cold.
The good thing about school in December is:
Senior Sweatshirts
A lot of days off from school
Knitting
Anything else you think is good about school in December
That's really all I have to say right now.
So bye.
