Quintus Valerius, my master, two months ago, has been from Bithynia to Rome by his father carrying letters. i set out together with my master. When had sailed for four days, suddenly greatest storm has arisen. The ship having been thrown here and there by the winds was in great danger. At last, when the waves and the winds had driven the ship towards a certain island, we scarcely escaped onto land. Having stayed for the whole night on the shore, at first light, because now the force of the storm seemed to have fallen, we returned onto the ship. Suddenly, we caught sight of several small boats full of men. The captain of our ship, when had caught sight of these small boats, he exclaimed, “Good heavens! These men are pirates. Oh no! We will not be able to escape.” To which my master said, “If you will have saved me,” he said, “my father, who is a rich and famous man, he will give to you a lot of money. This ship is faster than those small boats. Even if the pirates follow they will not take/capture us.” We tried to flee away, but it was in vain. For the pirates, because they had seen us trying to escape, attacked our ship. Right away, my master drew his sword and was shouting to me, “Follow me!” he leapt into the boat. Indeed, having followed, I began to defend my master, for he had been seen to receive a serious wound. The captain of the ship, because he was very afraid, he forbade us to help them. “If we resist the pirates,” he said, “without doubt, we will all be killed.”
