Juan-Salvador Plays Requiebros
Happy Holidays to you all!
Enjoy the Break!
I've posted the video of my performance in the Winter Concert up on YouTube. (My family had taped me). I'm playing a Spanish piece called Requiebros by Gaspar Cassado (in case you weren't there to get a program). I hope you can all find some time during the break to watch the video. I'd really appreciate it. In fact, it would be even nicer if you could give me a good rating (hint, hint). Whatever you end up doing, I again wish you Happy Holidays and A Great Winter Break.
The link you've been waiting for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8gFIoi0MhQ
See Ya Lata! (If you pronounce this phonetically, it sort of rolls off the tongue doesn't it?)

Hey latin buddies.
Marcus and Sextus left out of the field with Eucleides and were going with one of the two of the servants to their home. Suddenly, Eucleides said to the boys, “Don’t you wish to go to the public baths?”
Having heard this, the boys were very glad. Soon, they went to the …….

PARTY!
Happy Holiday season... After much debate I have decided to host the holiday party!!!!!!!!!
:) :) :)
How does the Friday 12/21 of the Holiday Program sound? We could meet up at my house an hour or so after the program...OR multiple hours later for an evening party like last year. What do you think?
If this date conflicts with anybody, please let me know.
Also, I would really like it if we did a bit of a pot-luck kind of thing where everyone brings one dish they make (or purchase) to the party...
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zo :)
P.S. do i need to make an invite or is this sufficient?
Ms. Careena
I e-mailed her and she said I can put her e-mail on here bcuz she would like to hear from us, so here it is.

Potential Scavenger Hunt Items-to-be-Found Postathon
Homework for December 6, 2007
It's late...I'm late...Everything's late. I'm sorry and this is probably pointless except for a few announcements I want to make. Firstly, I will present to you, the one, the only, Mirman Class of '08 homework:
English: Podcast
Science: Current Event (for most...LOL)
Geometry: p. 368 1-11
Algebra:
Latin:
Now that that's out of the way, let's talk. The scavenger hunt is kind of dying, and I don't want it to, so, to stop its decline in popularity, I am declaring Friday-Monday the first ever Potential Scavenger Hunt Items-to-be-Found Postathon. That's right folks, all this weekend post post post or comment comment comment that is all the ideas you have for items. Bad or good all will be accepted and welcomed. I will make a separate post where the comments should be placed and by Tuesday next week at lunch when we announce the list I want to see the number of comments on that post in the double digits. OK! WE CAN DO IT!
On another note, Tomorrow is Dress However You Feel Day. No gimmicks, 'kay?
Lastly, I appreciate Alexander's thought of creating an alumni blog for our grade, but this will still remain our main blog for the rest of this year. I was afraid there was some confusion, so hopefully this clears things up. WE ARE NOT, I REPEAT, ARE NOT, MOVING TO ANOTHER BLOG. We just hit 100 posts people, by the end of the year I expect over 1,000.
Hopefully I have left no stone unturned...wait. Sorry. If you missed the post where we are supposed to comment on what our wishlist is for Secret Santa, don't forget to post there. It is vital that everyone gives their secret santa an idea of what they want. Try to be specific, because if you aren't, it is very difficult for people to know what to get you. I know I have been stuck many a time before. It doesn't need to be exactly what you want e.g. My Little Pony Christmas Edition Deluxe. It just needs to be somewhat specific e.g. a doll...preferably My Little Pony...preferably Christmas Edition...preferably Deluxe.
Now that I've cleared that up, I think I'm done. Hope you all have a pleasant night, and enjoy reading this tomorrow. LOL.

An Inspiration for Us All/Evan's (Mrs. Boston's) Words of Wisdom No. 3
my next-door-neighbor's birthday is today, december 6th, and she is an amazing 106 YEARS OLD!!!!! she is sooooo unbelievable. her mind is so clear and she is the sweetest, most vital person i think i have ever met. I asked her how she thinks she has lived such a long life tonight, and she told me she thought it was from God's blessing and healthy eating. I'm not trying to convert anyone but let's focus on the healthy eating part. Hehehehehehehe. She knows EVERYTHING about healthy eating from how sugar is worse for you than you think (EAT molasses!!!) to which fruits and vegetables to put in a breakfast shake! She told me all of this and more....and SHE'S 106!!!!!!!!!! Personally, I'm inspired. And to all those vegetarians out there, she did...and may still eat red meat!!! But whatever...i'm just kidding anyway. My point is that in life we just need to be kind to others and eat healthily (is what she told me.) Basically I was so moved that I just wanted to share this with you guys. ONE HUNDRED AND SIX!!!!!!!!! OMG, she has lived through like everything we are learning for our AMERICAN EVENTS TESTS. LOL thats cool.
LOVE, evan
P.S. if you listen to her speak, you'd think she was like 75. the only thing oldish about her is her furniture...and maybe her T.V.
P.P.S. she escaped the Armenian genocide!!!!! sorry...i just luv her. i think she's gonna live forever a la Tuck Everlasting.
WE LOVE YOU MRS. BOSTON!!!!!!!! (my shout-out but i said 'we'....hope you all don't mind. :P)

Secret Santa
Please remember that every present should be under $20 and no gift cards -- except for people who request them.
Thanks,

Secret Santa!!!!
i am so excited for secret santa, and to make it easier on those who have absolutely no idea what to get their "secret person," i think that we should all post a general "something." it shouldn't be too specific, so that person has to really buy you something that "they" think that you want.
p.s.,
i am crazy excited for winter break and the holiday program!

Latin Lines 7-17 due tomorrow

T: lines 7 and 8
Evan: lines 9 and 10
Salvador: lines 11 and 12 and 17

Clothing and Toy Drive
Here's a copy of the article that is going in tomorrow's newsletter:
California Wildfire Victims In Need
In keeping with the holiday spirit, please consider donating a few items to help the victims of the recent fires. Members of the student body wish their Mirman community to participate in easing the recovery of those families displaced from their homes by the wildfires. The Salvation Army, in partnership with Goodwill, is accepting donations. Please bring new or gently used, laundered clothing and/or children’s toys to the front or back gates starting December 5th and ending on the 14th. To make it easier for collection, please remember to place these items in either boxes or plastic bags. Donations received at Mirman will be taken to Goodwill for further distribution to those in need. Thank you for your generous efforts!
For further information please contact Madeleine Shelton, US 4, at smileyface1108@yahoo.com or 1(310) 451-1545.
So, if you could, help the wildfire victims by helping me with this drive, as it can't happen unless I have support of at least a few classmates. Anybody in the upper school can help, so spread the word.
Thanks,
Madeleine

Mr. West Homework
If you do, please post.
>Mitch<
Creating a Kaleidoscope Image
Prepare object file
1. Open the “Shoe.psd” image, and check to see that the resolution is at 300.
2. You will need to use a variety of tools to separate the shoe from the background (Magic Wand, Lasso, Easer Tool with a soft edge).
3. Your goal is a very clean selection, but with a slightly soft edge (anti-aliased). This will take patience and attention to detail. Zoom in so that you can clearly see the edges.
4. You can add a black background layer to see if there are any stray marks. Clean up, trash the background, and Save.
5. Create a new file for your kaleidoscope, 10” x 10” @ 300 dpi. Add horizontal and vertical Guides that intersect in the middle. Name it “Kaleidoscope.”
Creating the Kaleidoscope
1. Drag the “Shoe” layer onto the Kaleidoscope file. Using Free Transform with the Shift key, resize so that it will fit on the file, leaving some space at the edge. You can add a vertical Guide at 1” for reference.
2. Center the tip of the shoe at the intersection of the Guides.
3. Duplicate the layer, Rotate 40° using Free Transform and the menu bar at the top, then position the toe of “Layer 2 copy” at the intersection of the Guides.
4. Repeat this procedure 7 more times until you have completed the circle.
5. Drag to reverse the order of the layer so the pattern of the bow at the toe is revealed.
Adding Color
1. Merge the layers, and rename the layer “Shoes.”
2. Select the Magic Wand and set the Tolerance to 70. Select the shoes image. Add to (Shift) or subtract from (Option) the selection until you have only the shores.
3. Go to Select>Save Selection and name it “Shoe Wheel.” The selection will be saved as a new channel, which can be loaded at any time and will not be lost when you close the file.
4. Select Command-I to invert the “Shoe Wheel.”
5. Select the Radial Gradient and foreground and background colors using the Color panel. In the menu bar, select a Mode (try Overlay). Reduce the opacity to 85%.
6. Drag from the center, out to the edge of the shoes to apply your gradient.
Experiment
1. Try adding other filters and combinations of filters.
2. Try adding an Adjustment Layer and playing with contrast, color balance, hue, and saturation.
2. Add a background layer and fill with a color that adds contrast to your piece.
Hope this helps! Happy Hanuka for those who celebrate it!
Peace and Love,
Ellie Diamant

5.) i undid all of my knitting. i was quite frustrated. and on top of that, i couldn't exactly remember how.

December
Guessssss what! It's me again. Isn't that exciting?!!!
Well, I hope this new month is turning out marvelously for everyone!
I have nothing extraordinary to say excepting my two previous comments
(for they indeed were extraordinary).
The problem with school in December is that my and other people's anticipation for Winter Break can be stronger than their regard for their present classes.
And it can also get pretty darn cold.
The good thing about school in December is:
Senior Sweatshirts
A lot of days off from school
Knitting
Anything else you think is good about school in December
That's really all I have to say right now.
So bye.

Latin
I'm posting the Latin Homework (Lines 1-6) here on the blog. I hope it helps. Even if you did them, you can compare the answers.
Here goes:
Now it was the sixth hour. Titus Cornelius, when alone each day, embarked from his house into the Plain of Mars on the outskirts of Rome down to the Baths of Nero, for he and his friends met and spoke together about the king of the city.
When Titus had arrived to that place, with his money having been given, he entered into the entrance passage. There he greeted several of his friends and went into one changing room. HIs clothing having been taken off he handed it to the servants themselves, who were carrying his perfume and strigil.
Again. Hope it helps. yup.
Homework for November 29, 2007
I'm so excited for the Scavenger Hunt. There has been some mix-up as to when we're starting, and I would like to clear that up. I think we should wait until Tuesday and make a tradition of the announcement of the objects on that day. I have come up with some special occasion ideas for week long competitions. For example, which team can bring the most buttons to the rendezvous. In addition, I also want to remind everyone who hasn't turned in their Drama sheet to do so. That is all I believe, and without further ado...the homework:
English- Vocab test
Algebra 1- problems 7, 9, and 11
Spanish- Type answers for Ejercicio A
Latin- Translate Chapter 43 lines 1-6
One last thing, I think that it's OK if we have duplicates of colors. I think its more important that everyone is wearing some solid color.
I think that's all so far. I'll keep you POSTED! HA HA HA

Homework for November 28th, 2007
Today's advisory was really fun and helpful. I got a little nervous that the blog was dying, but it looks like everybody is still into the idea. So here's the homework due tomorrow:
Spanish- Ejercicio A in Subjunctive unit
Latin-?
French-Activities For You Workbook pg. 57-58
Algebra-?
There are a few additional things that people could catch up on. If anybody hasn't corrected their poems for English they were due on Tuesday, so you should get them in. Also, Mr. Maynard wants those forms, so. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! Get them in! Especially you, Ellie. Just kidding.
On a lighter note, everybody should post atl least one thing for our scavenger hunt in the comments of this blog. I've already got mine. Somebody explain to the French people what it is, for I have not the energy nor the will. We should discuss that so comment away. OH YEAH!

Upcoming Art Due Dates and the Sunlight and Spotlight Instrucions
The kaleidoscope picture is due 12/7/07, the 66th anniversary of pearl harbor. pearl harbor was also sad. many ppl died. RIP :-(
Here are the instructions for the Sunlight and Spotlight (remember, it is just 1 picture)
Focusing A Spotlight
Preparation
Adding a spotlight effect to an interior is accomplished by selecting what will be affected in the scene and then choosing a soft, roughly circular area for brightening.
1. Open spotlight_start.jpg, check for size and resolution and save as a different name.
Creating the spotlight
An approximately circular selection is drawn over the center of the cross; this will be the area the describes the spotlighting effect. The selection is softened appropriately depending on how focused the spotlight will be.
1. Duplicate the background layer and work on the copy.
2. Get a feathered lasso (this example uses a feather of 175 px) and draw a rough circle around the area that you want to spotlight. Save the selection.
3. Use Image>Adjustments>Brightness & Contrast to raise the brightness of the selected area high enough to create the desired effect.
4. For a more intense impression of spotlighting, the surroundings are darkened by reversing the selection and reducing the contrast and brightness.
Hope that helps. I'm not putting the images on here cause i forgot how to take screen shots so i can't put the images from the document onto this post. Hope you dig it. Don't forget to turn it in and also she's grading everything up to 10/26/07 tomorrow so CORRECT YOUR PICTURES! Don't forget: 10 by 7.5 in 300 resolution!
Peace and love,
Ellie

Homework due November 26, 2007
Glad to finally be back with this HW post. Sorry, I'm late. Most probably have already started their homework. The only things I will post are those due tomorrow. I think we should make the people in charge of each class notify about long term assignments. I will make sure that anything is missing, but I don't want to have to post every last thing.
Due tomorrow:
Spanish-Worksheet (Ejercicio B)
Latin?
French?
English-Vocab
Geometry-Worksheets (Polygons, Old Test)
Algebra?
Hope this finds you in time. Comment with any corrections or additions
One last note: I am now the only moderator because I didn't want there to be any mishaps with the senior email. See you all tomorrow.

Science
People who are doing Science Fair, turn in you proposal. It was due on Tuesday for people who are in the elective (Rick). Everyone else, I guess it's due sometime soon.
People who are or are not doing Science Fair, write your final current event, not just of the month, not just of the semester, not just of the year, but probably of your entire life. Te current event is due at the end of the month.
That's all folks (as far as I know).
BTW, whoever made that poll, good job. I voted for Benny Lava.
Crazy Indian Video... Buffalaxed!
Semi-Triumphant Return
I think we should give each person a responsibility of some class' handouts and resources. For example, Ellie has already been staying on top of the art work, so I propose that she continues to post all art information. If everyone has a little bit of responsibility I think we would be much more likely to succeed. Here is what I think would be good assignments:
Human Development-Davis
Algebra 1-Michael and/or Tahirah
Geometry-Kayla
Science-Alexander and/or Tahirah
English-Juan-Salvador and/or Jackie
History-Maddy
Art-Ellie
Spanish-Ella and/or J.R.
Latin-Evan and/or Rick

These are just suggestions, and it's all up for discussion, so if you want to change or finalize just post a comment, and we can start a discussion. I will post the final list as soon as it is done. We will discuss the responsibilities of these people. You may notice I'm not on the list, and that's because I will still be posting the homework post every day, and moderating all of the posts.
I am ready to get more serious about this, and I hope you all are too.

P.S. Ellie, could you post the assignment sheet for art if you haven't already.

blending instructions
Preparation
The key to a successful blending is to convince the viewer that the subjects of two photographs are actually one image. This is achieved by making sure that the lighting in the original photographs is as similar as possible, and by a careful transition, partially erasing the upper layer.
1. Open the hand.psd and candle.psd files and Save as to different file names so you are not making changes on the original.
3. Reduce the file size to half, and double the resolution for each: 9” x 6.75” @ 360 dpi.
4. Prepare a new file that is 7.5” x 10” @ 360 dpi and name it Blending_Final.psd. Drag both of the resized images onto this file, with the hand layer below the candle layer. Close the two files.
Creating the Transition
1. An inspection of the image will show that the backgrounds are dissimilar in color, and that the candle is too large and long to fit on the finger to create a successful transition.
2. To improve the similarity of the backgrounds, select the candle layer and add a New Adjustment Layer>Levels. Be sure to select the box “Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask.”
3. Drag the gamma (gray triangle) slider to the left to lighten the background of the candle layer until it matches the background of the hand layer as much as possible.
4. Select the candle layer. Using the rectangle marquee tool, draw a rectangle around the portion of the candle that you want to keep (how long do you want the candle to be on top of the finger?). Select>Inverse and delete.
5. Drag the candle layer down so that it overlaps the finger. You will notice that it is too wide to fit. Use the Transform tool to reduce the size of the candle so that it will make a smooth transition onto the finger. This step takes patience and several adjustments before the candle fits in place.
6. Crop the image so it contains the two layers. You can open the Levels adjustment layer and make any necessary minor adjustments to the candle background. Save.
7. Using a large, soft-edged Eraser, blend the finger and the candle together. Also, run the eraser along the edge between the two layers to smooth the background transition. Adjust until the transition appears seamless and you have achieved the desired effect.
hope this helps to all of you who haven't finished yet.
Peace and Love,
Ellie Diamant
btw, i just watche la vie en rose and it's amazing. you all should watch it.

HALLELUJAH!
THERE IS A GOD! AND THIS IS MY PROOF:
Seniors wrote this:
Would it be possible for us to get an extension 'till Monday on the
Lectio Divina?
Mr West wrote this:
Done! I have just been able to pick up my emails from the last three days.
I understand your need and agree with you. Please plan on using Thursday
morning as a work session. I will need a bit of your time, but I will
release you to your own devices when I am done. I hope that works for
everyone.
Everyone please remember that you should have some substantive remarks made
in your journals about your selected six readings. If you need help or want
to conference about any of the readings, please feel free to ask me either
on Thursday or when you have time on Wednesday.
Sincerely,
Mr. West
i am so happpeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
zoey :) :) :)
WHAT DO WE DO?
so. we have a problem. for the most part, none of us have started or at least gotten one chapter of lectio divina done. that means we have six hours of work to do tomorrow! aaah. obviously, we could have worked on this before hand, but we have had a TON of homework! When Mr. West assigned this he said we had two weeks to complete it. In actuality, we only had ten days (due to the tardy returning of our journals).
I think that this totally validates an extension. Since Mr. West has not yet responded to our email I think that it is really important that we ask him in person for the extension to Monday.
Please post if you would like to be the one to ask him. If not, I guess I'll do it...:(
Good luck on your lectios everyone!

Chapter 42 Translation
4th Year Upper School
Quintus Valerius, my master, two months ago, has been from Bithynia to Rome by his father carrying letters. i set out together with my master. When had sailed for four days, suddenly greatest storm has arisen. The ship having been thrown here and there by the winds was in great danger. At last, when the waves and the winds had driven the ship towards a certain island, we scarcely escaped onto land. Having stayed for the whole night on the shore, at first light, because now the force of the storm seemed to have fallen, we returned onto the ship. Suddenly, we caught sight of several small boats full of men. The captain of our ship, when had caught sight of these small boats, he exclaimed, “Good heavens! These men are pirates. Oh no! We will not be able to escape.” To which my master said, “If you will have saved me,” he said, “my father, who is a rich and famous man, he will give to you a lot of money. This ship is faster than those small boats. Even if the pirates follow they will not take/capture us.” We tried to flee away, but it was in vain. For the pirates, because they had seen us trying to escape, attacked our ship. Right away, my master drew his sword and was shouting to me, “Follow me!” he leapt into the boat. Indeed, having followed, I began to defend my master, for he had been seen to receive a serious wound. The captain of the ship, because he was very afraid, he forbade us to help them. “If we resist the pirates,” he said, “without doubt, we will all be killed.”
Make sure that all of the Latin students see this post! if we all have the translation done, it will totally mess up the subs plans for the day! we can be bad, by being good.
Lectio
I think we have AMC-8 coming up.
The official Latin sub is Ms Alcantara (sp?) who was TA for Room 2B in previous years. She's a nice person. I really like her. Another thing, SHE DOESN'T KNOW LATIN. This is gonna be fun.
Remember to label the originals in your art photos!

Belated Mr. West Email
Dear Seniors:
I miscalculated the time I would have available today. Because of some obligations I have with a committee of the PSL, an individual parent appointment and an off-campus obligation during lunch that will take me out for the rest of the day, I will not be available to return your journals this morning at recess. Monday’s schedule is equally challenging, but I believe we can connect by hook or crook then. Let’s plan on seeing each at the end of your lunch period on Monday. I should be back on campus by then. If not, we’ll meet at dismissal on Monday.
Sorry for the inconvenience. Remember, you will have time to work on your reading assignments and journal entries next week, including class time. If you need some help on anything, you can always email me.
Sincerely,
Mr. West

The Force of Friction
• the resistive force that opposes the motion or attempted motion of an object through a fluid or past another object with which it is in contact
• always acts in a direction to oppose motion
• the resistive force that opposes the motion or attempted motion of an object through a fluid or past another object with which it is in contact
• always acts in a direction to oppose motion
• between two surfaces, the amount depends on the kinds of material and how much they are pressed together
• due to surface bumps and also to the stickiness of atoms on the surfaces of the two materials
Net Force—
• Force is simply a push or a pull
• Net Force is a combination of all forces that act on an object. It is the net force that changes an object’s states of motion.
The equilibrium rule:
The vector sum of forces acting on a non-accelerating object or system of objects equals zero.

November
Hope you're all doing well in this fantastic new month!!!
Feels different to be in November doesn't it?
As a welcome, we have the famous (or infamous) ERBs!!!
But Thanksgiving will help us recover from them.
And then there's the usual Homework. You know— English essay, Ind proj, Art photos, Language Tests, all that fun stuff.
Wonder if we have math...
Oh, and the science movies are gonna be great. Ours is hilarious so far. But of course, most of you wouldn't know cause you're not allowed to see it yet! Well, that's about it. Oh yeah, and there's always human development to do...
Now that's it. yup.

Pushing Pixels
1. Open Duck.psd and check to see that the resolution is set at 300 dpi.
2. Save as to a new file name.
3. Using the lasso with a 15 px feather, draw an oval selection around the duck. You can keep a permanent record of this selection by choosing Select>Save Selection.
Applying Filters
1. To distort the pixels in this selection, choose Filter>Distort>Twirl.
2. Increase your view of the duck in the preview window by selecting the minus sign below the image window.
3. Adjust the magnitude of the twirl based upon the effect you desire.
4. Choose Select>Inverse to apply a different filter to the rest of the image.
5. The sample has an Ocean Ripple distortion.
Some Alternatives
1. Make a closer selection of the duck and see how this adjusts the effects of the filter.
2. Try a variety of filters to both selections.
3. Add more than one filter to the selection to test compound effects.
Hope this helps, its due on friday as is the edges which is just the filter "glowing edges..." Please don't forget.
Also: don't forget the dance this friday, Rick's party is on wednesday, and my party is next month on november 9th.
See you all tomorrow!

Science
Zoey Poll
Newton’s Laws of Motion
The law of inertia:
Every object continues in a state of rest or of uniform speed in a straight line unless acted on by a nonzero (or unbalanced) force.
Examples:
• A sheet of paper can be quickly withdrawn from under a soft drink can without the can toppling, because the can has inertia.
• If you swing a stone overhead in a horizontal circle and the string breaks, the tendency of the stone is to follow a straight-line path.
The law of acceleration:
The acceleration produced by a net force on an object is directly proportional to the net force, is in the same direction as the net force, and is inversely proportional to the mass of the object.
• Fforce)=m(mass)a(acceleration)
Equation for acceleration:
Acceleration = net force/mass
A = F/m
Small net force, large mass ⇒small acceleration
Large net force, small mass ⇒ large acceleration
Examples:
• Consider a cart pushed along a track with a certain force. If the force remains the same while the mass of the cart decreases to half, the acceleration of the cart doubles.
• Push a cart along a track so twice as much net force acts upon it. If the acceleration remains the same, what is a reasonable explanation? The mass of the cart doubled when the force doubled.
When acceleration is g – free fall.
When the only force acting on a falling object is gravity, with negligible air resistance, the object is in free fall. An object in free fall accelerates toward Earth at 10 m/s per second.
Examples:
• At one instant an object in free fall has a speed of 40 m/s. Its speed one second later is 50 m/s. (We assume the object is falling downward.)
Twice the force on twice the mass → same acceleration as half the force on half the mass.
Examples:
• A 5-kg iron ball and a 10-kg iron ball are dropped from rest. For negligible air resistance, the acceleration of the heavier ball will be the same.
• A 5-kg iron ball and a 10-kg iron ball are dropped from rest. When the free-falling 5-kg ball reaches a speed of 10 m/s, the speed of the free-falling 10-kg ball is 10 m/s.
When acceleration is g—free fall.
The ratio of weight to mass is the same for all falling objects in the same locality; hence, their accelerations are the same in the absence of air resistance.
Examples:
• Demonstration of a feather and a coin in a vacuum. In a vacuum, a feather and a coin fall together at g—the acceleration due to gravity.
• When an air filled glass tube containing a coin and a feather is inverted, the coin falls quickly to the bottom of the tube while the feather flutters to the bottom.

Update
Ethan Frome due Friday
Art: Photographs 8-10 due Thursday, Pushing Pixels due Friday
#8: Reflection Project - Make a photograph where reflection of light is a main composition or interest point. Look at how things reflect light and how a reflection point in a photo can major interest. Be Creative.
#9: Silhouette Project - A silhouette is produced when we take a photograph of a subject that has strong BACK lighting. The subject will be darker than the background. Of course, in a silhouette it is the SHAPE of the subject that makes the photo interesting.
#10: Shapes Project - Look at the shapes of things around you and look for interesting patterns or lighting contrasts. Look for subject matter that is part of our daily life, but so close we forget it is there. For this assignment you are to look for GEOMETRIC SHAPES as they appear in the world around you.
See you all tomorrow,

3. Select a large, soft-edged brush and rub over the area to be lightened with the Dodge Tool. Experiment wit the Exposure setting.
4. To save this selection in case you want to make additional adjustments in the future, go to Select>Save Selection and give the selection a name. Later you will be able to “Load” the selection even after you have closed the file.
5. To darken an area, use the same feathering technique with the Burn Tool.
Darken
1. Make sure the image is in RGB mode.
2. Select Image>Adjust>Curves. Option-click the center of the graph to increase the number of gridlines. Click on the “Grow” box in the lower right-hand corner of the Curves dialog box to increase its size.
3. Darken the overall image by pulling down on the center point until you have achieved the effect you want.
Solarize
1. Select Layer>New Adjustment Layer and select Curves, then OK.
2. Place anchors at the one-quarter and three-quarters points on the line.
3. Create an “S” curve by moving these points up and down along the line [see example].
4. Continue to adjust until you have the desired effect. Option-click to reset the Curves dialog box.
Color
1. Select Layer>New Adjustment Layer> Color Balance. Experiment with adding different colors to highlights, shadows and midtones. You can also select various blending modes in the initial dialog box.
Due Friday 10/19 at 11:59 pm. hope it helps. Btw, all the sheets about how to do certain techniques are on the server so you can reach them

A Few More Reminders
Science: Current Event on Monday
Speech: Evan, we need to find a time to work on our dual interp! I can't skip yearbook, so LEAP is the only option besides recess, lunch and weekends. I'll start memorizing my lines tonight and perhaps by Monday I'll know it so we can run it through in front of Ms. Zinman.

Creating a Mezzotint Effect
1. Open the hillside.jpg in Photoshop.
2. Check the file size by selecting Image> Image Size.
3. Check to confirm that the RESOLUTION is 300 dpi.
4. Double-click on the Hand Tool to fit your image to the screen
5. Save the file as a new name to your practice folder and select "Maximum" quality when requested.
6. Add Layer> New Adjustment Layer> Levels and correct the tonal range.
Mezzotint
1. Make sure you are working on the Background layer.
2. Select Image> Adjustments> Hue & Saturation and drag the saturation slider to the left to approximately -70. This amount will vary when you are working on your own file. You want to remove almost all of the color.
3. Select Image> Adjustments> Color Balance and change the settings to +30 Red and -30 Yellow. This will give the image an old-fashioned look.
4. Select Filter> Noise> Add Noise and check the UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION and MONOCHROMATIC options. [The sample uses about 35%]. Again, the amount very much depends on the image you choose. This effect will give the image the appearance of a mezzotint.
Border
1. Click on the background color icon to open the color picker dialog box.
2. Use the eyedropper to select a color for the border from the image itself; you can adjust this color if you wish.
3. Choose Image> Canvas Size and add a uniform amount to the edges [1 inch] of the image.
4. After you click OK, the border will appear as the color chosen in the background box.
5. Apply Alien Skin filers or Photographic Edges to the border area. [Filter> Alien Skin Textures> Wood> Ebony].
It's due Friday 10/12 so I hope this helps!
Peace and love,
~Ellie~

Response from Mr. West
Dear Seniors:
That’s a very general question you’ve posed, but I will try to clarify as best I can from what you’ve given me.
Given the format of the Lectio, I want you to use the three sections of Chapter 1 of Constructing a Life Philosophy as your text reference. For each of the three sections you should one entry (3 in all) in your journals. Each entry should reflect a minimum 1 hr. time of close reading and reflection; each entry should be dated and include the quote to which you are responding; each entry should, like an expository essay, state the personal significance of your selected quote and develop into some statement about how the ideas or concepts included in the quote might change or alter your personal point of view or behavior. It is also possible that a quote could simply reinforce a point of view or behavior. If that’s the case, explain it. Remember that you are challenging yourself for new insights or discoveries about your thought process and/or behavior. All of this is building toward your ability to write an extended personal creed – a personal statement of belief.
Because your entries should be spontaneous, the expectations of reviewed and edited thought and coherence that I might apply to a prepared essay would not pertain here. I am not expecting you to revise your writing here. I am, however, assuming that you have spent some time during the Meditatio phase of the Lectio to consider your thoughts carefully and to craft your response as carefully as possible as you write during the Oratio.
If this is still unclear, please feel free to come down and visit with me during your recess today for clarification.
Thanks,
Mr. West
Art Photos due Thursday
1. ECOLOGY PROJECT- Find a subject that tells a story about how we effect our environment in a positive way and a negative way. Total of 2 photos. What story does this photo tell? Be sure to get close enough to include ONLY important items in composition.
2. BUILDING PROJECT- Every building has its own character or feeling that it gives you as you enter it or look at it. Like a real person, you need t0 look at it closely to capture the interesting details. Find a building and photograph PART of it so that you express that character. This part might be a door, stair, window, or a crack in a wall. Try to use an unusual camera angle for this. You will need to watch your composition on this one, be sure to only put important things in the frame.
Rancho Oso Poems Assignment Sheet
You will be writing two poems based on your "dude ranch" experience. Specific directions are as follows:
1. Just like in horseback riding, tempo is everything. Accordingly, one poem must be conventional, using a consistent rhyme scheme and consistent rhythm and obeying traditional capitalization and punctuation.
2. Ironically, though, just like in life, no matter how smooth you think your ride is going, something, perhaps a startled horse, may throw you off the saddle. With this in mind, the second poem should be in free verse; that is, it should not adhere to standard conventions. It should not have a regular rhythm or rhyme scheme, and it may take liberty with capitalization and punctuation. A concrete poem (one in which the form echoes the topic) may even be used.
However you choose, one poem should be about life's certainties, its knowns, comforts, and familiarities. The other should be about the opposite, about life's uncertainties, unknowns, discomforts, curve balls. In any event, each poem must be a minimum of 14 lines, must be titled, and must employ poetic devices, including sense imagery, figures of speech (simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, etc.), and alliteration.
After the poems have been returned to you, you will revise them and return them with an illustrated cover.
1. The cover should be an illustration that captures the essence of your two poems. Accordingly, your illustration should reflect the duality of life.
2. The illustration may be computer generated, hand-drawn, or even a photograph, but it MUST be a quality product.
3. In addition to the illustration, your cover must include the following information: your name, September 2007, and an original title.
4. Obviously, the cover and the two poems must be bound (stapling is fine)
5. The cover is not due until the finished product is due, the date of which will be announced.
Both poems are due October 15th

Physics Study Guide
VOCABULARY
Acceleration = the rate at which velocity changes with time; the change in velocity may be in magnitude, or in direction, or in both. It is usually measured in m/s 2
Air resistance = the force of friction acting on an object due to its motion through air
Atoms = measurement of mass -- An atom consists of a dense nucleus of positively-charged protons and electrically-neutral neutrons, surrounded by a much larger electron cloud consisting of negatively-charged electrons. An atom is electrically neutral if it has the same number of protons as electrons. The number of protons in an atom defines the chemical element to which it belongs, while the number of neutrons determines the isotope of the element.
Average speed = TOTAL distance covered per amount of travel time
Constant velocity = (constant) speed and direction with no changes
Constant speed =
Density = a measure of mass per volume for a substance
Force = a push, or pull
Free fall = motion under the influence of only gravitational pull
Inertia = the property of things to resist changes in motion
Instantaneous speed = the speed at any given instant -- what a speedometer reads
Kilogram = one unit of mass.
Mass = The amount of matter in an object. It is the total weight of the atoms or molecules in the object. Mass is constant.
Speed = distance covered per amount of travel time
Velocity = speed AND the direction of motion -- a vector quantity
Weight = the force of gravity on an object -- measurement of force holding an object’s mass in place
SCIENTISTS & THEIR STUDIES
Aristotle on Motion
• Natural and Violent Motion
• Every object in the universe had a proper place and it was determined by its nature to get there – NATURAL
• However, all other unnatural motions were VIOLENT
• FOUR MAIN ELEMENTS: Earth, Water, Fire and Air
o Combinations of these elements would seek their natural place in the universe – depending on what percent of the element each object had within.
• ALL motions resulted from the nature of the moving object or from a sustained push or pull. If an object was in its “proper” place, it would not move unless subjected to force (except for celestial objects which moved in circular paths). The normal state was one of REST.
• His theories were beyond question for nearly 2000 years – until the 16th century because the earth must have been in its proper place, and a force capable of moving the earth was inconceivable, it seemed quite clear the earth did not move.
Copernicus
• Reasoned from astronomical observations that the earth traveled around the sun! Kept his thoughts from the public because he feared persecution and had doubts about himself. He could not reconcile the idea of the moving earth with the prevailing ideas of motion at that time.
Galileo
• Believes Copernicus – disproves Aristotle; finds that a stone twice as heavy as another did not fall twice as fast. Except for the small effect of air resistance, he found that objects of various weights would fall together and hit the ground at the same time.
• Galileo described motion in terms of time rates of change. Rates are speed, velocity and acceleration.
String Theory
• String theory is a model of fundamental physics, whose building blocks are one-dimensional extended objects called strings, rather than the zero-dimensional point particles that form the basis for the standard model of particle physics -- Exists on a quantum level rather than a universal
FORMULAS
Speed = distance / time
Average speed = total distance covered / time interval
Total distance covered = average speed X time
Acceleration = change of velocity / time interval
